About organising a sponsored dog walk

If you love dogs and know lots of people who have a dog, this is a great way to raise awareness and money for PDSA whilst exercising your dog and yourself! Organise an enjoyable route, arrange competitions for fittest dog and owner, sell refreshments and ask each participant to get sponsorship for taking part in the walk.

If you think you could take on this event register to recieve your downloadable materials and get started!

Things to consider

  • Owners need to be aware that they are responsible for their dog's welfare. They'll need to bring some water, keep them on a lead, under control and clear up their mess.
  • Registration to enter the dog walk - this will make it easier for you to know how many owners and pets are involved.
  • You will need to plan a suitable route.
  • Giving out maps to all the participants will ensure everyone stays together and knows the planned route.
  • Make sure the dogs have access to fresh water, especially if it is a hot day.
  • Make it fun - you could award prizes for the best behaved dog or the fittest dog and owner.

Skills

The key skills you will develop whilst completing this event will be:

Organisation Icon

Organisation - It is important that you prioritise your tasks and organise your time; you will have lots of people and things to organise so make sure you have a detailed plan and list of what needs to be done and by when. With the sponsored dog walk you will be responsible for the organisation of lots of people and their dogs!

Creativity Icon

Creativity - Everyone has to be creative at some point in their working lives, whether it is designing an advert or solving a problem. Creativity is an important skill, which can be applied to almost any task. Even people who think they are not creative in the artistic sense need a little creative spark for other areas of their life and these challenges will help provide employers with evidence of this. The sponsored dog walk allows you to be creative in preparing the route, the awards and anything else you may want to involve in the event.

Networking Icon

Networking - Many of the challenges require an individual who has the ability to initiate contact with people who can help support the event in some way as well as building a relationship with people. this is essential in organising a successful event.

Communication Icon

Communication - The ability to effectively communicate your thoughts, intentions, ideas and plans is essential. Employers look for people with good communication skills, including the ability to present to others. As well as the ability to communicate orally, employers look for written communication skills, particularly if the role involves writing letters or copy for adverts, magazines, newspapers and websites.
