Talks in schools
PDSA school talks are a great way to enagage your pupils in responsible pet care.
Volunteer talks
PDSA has a team of trained volunteers who provide talks to primary schools across the UK.
Our ‘Talkies’ presentations cover six key areas:
- PDSA on a mission!
- What do pets need?
- Hero animals
- Pet ER!
- How you can help us
- Quiz
Pupils are captivated from the start, finding out about how PDSA came to be the UK’s leading veterinary charity. Pupils are involved in discovering what five things all animals need to be healthy and happy.
Hear about some amazing stories of the brave and clever animals who have been presented the PDSA Dickin Medal for bravery in conflict, and its counterpart, the PDSA Gold Medal, for civilian animals, awarded for devotion to duty.
See some of the animals PDSA has helped, including a dog who surprised vets when a rubber duck showed up on an x-ray of her tummy!
The talks show pupils how the charity needs public support to continue to help these animals and shows them some fun ways they can help too.
Each pupil will receive a free copy of our children’s magazine Animal Antics and schools will be left with posters and other fundraising materials. Teachers can then use the resources in this Education area to set relevant tasks or homework based on the talk.
The talks can be tailored to a variety of ages, small groups or to larger groups, e.g. assemblies.
In certain areas, we may also be able to provide more career focused talks to secondary schools or to help in the delivery of certain aspects of BTEC animal care courses, but please contact us for more details. We will certainly be able to help you in some way.
Pet healthcare visits
A PDSA veterinary nurse spends a day at your school giving talks on pet health to each class.
Outstanding clubs can also qualify for a PDSA PetCheck vehicle visit, where parents can bring their dogs along after school for a free health check in one of our special PetCheck vehicles.
Where a Pet healthcare visit cannot be arranged, we will endeavour to provide a volunteer Talkies presenter.
Priority will be given to schools who have nominated PDSA as Charity of the Year or who have helped us through fundraising.
