Donate your holiday change to PDSA. You know it makes cents

Carol Smillie supports PDSA's foreign coin appeal
Carol Smillie urges animal lovers to donate their leftover holiday change to PDSA

Vet charity PDSA has launched a new fundraising campaign encouraging animal lovers to donate their leftover holiday change.

The initiative is being backed by TV personality and lifelong animal lover Carol Smillie and her pet pooch Jess. It is hoped the appeal will raise thousands for the charity’s vital veterinary services.

Special collection tins, with a photograph of Carol and black lab Jess, have been placed in PDSA’s charity shops and PetAid hospitals across the UK, making it easy for people to donate their spare holiday change. Businesses, such as pubs and gyms are also being urged to get involved, by displaying a collection tin at their venues.

Carol, who is well known for presenting a host of travelling TV programmes including ‘Holiday’ and ‘The Travel Show’ said: “I’ve done my fair share of travelling and I know how easy it is to accumulate piles of foreign coins after being abroad.

“Instead of leaving them to collect dust in the back of a drawer, why not donate them to PDSA? It couldn’t be easier to help raise money for this fantastic charity and the great work they do helping sick pets across the UK.”

Every contribution, however small, can really make a difference to a sick pet’s life. Just €3* will help to buy ear drops for a poorly pet, €7 will contribute towards the cots of a bottle of lifesaving antibiotics and €13 helps towards a stethoscope so a vet can listen to sick pet’s heart.

PDSA Fundraising Manager, Brenda Smith, said: “If you’ve recently holidayed in Barbados, relaxed in Bulgaria or enjoyed a city break in Barcelona and have spare foreign coins lying around the house, then please donate them to PDSA. Every cent counts and will help us to care for the thousands of sick and injured pets we see every day.

“Whether its dollars, euros or yen – any currency can be taken to the nearest PDSA store, PetAid hospital or call 01952 204791 to request a collection box today.”

PDSA is the UK’s leading veterinary charity, providing free veterinary treatment to the sick and injured pets of people in need. In 2010, delivery of the charity’s veterinary services will cost more than £50 million. PDSA receives no Government or lottery money, and is funded entirely by public support, so fundraising activities such as the holiday change appeal are vital to the charity.
