PDSA has launched a free online education programme for primary schools that links animal welfare with the national curriculum.

The new online resource at www.pdsa.org.uk/education, has been written by teachers for teachers, and includes downloadable lesson plans, worksheets, assessments, videos and presentations.

Vicki Craighill, PDSA Youth & Education manager, said: “PDSA’s new education programme is a comprehensive resource for all Key Stage 1 and 2 teachers. Many schools have animals, and lots of children have pets at home. So teaching people about animal welfare at an early age is vital for thousands of pupils across the country, who will also be the pet owners of tomorrow.

“At launch there are a dozen lesson plans, with fun and engaging activities to download. These cover lessons in citizenship, science, history and English. We’ll be refreshing the content regularly and, by registering online, teachers can keep up to date on our latest developments.”

Teachers can also arrange for PDSA volunteers to visit their school and talk to pupils about the charity’s work, as well as booking pet healthcare visits from PDSA vets and nurses.

There are also resources available for extra-curricular activities, including an after-school club, Pet Protectors.

Vicki added: “We’re all really excited about PDSA’s new education programme. It is going to make a massive difference to how children are taught about animal welfare, and represents a great boost for our furry friends nationwide.”
