F.A.Q Gerbils

I keep a group of gerbils together and one of them is losing hair around his tail. Why is this?

As you keep more than one gerbil, it may be that one of the gerbil group is biting off this gerbil’s hair. It may also be that the gerbil is biting off his own hair or sometimes they rub against the items in their cage, which wears away their hair. This can be due to stress, overcrowding, or boredom.

You should think about the accommodation you are providing for your gerbils and think about whether it is large enough. You can introduce more playthings as well as deeper burrowing material.

There are other causes of hair loss, such as skin infections, so it is important to get your gerbil checked out by your vet to see what is causing this hair loss and if any treatment is necessary.
