Help us to continue to provide emergency care to sick and injured pets
The Sunderland Echo has lent its support to PDSA to help raise £15,000 towards the running of Sunderland’s PDSA PetAid hospital, The Reay Hudson Centre.
Since 2006, demand in Sunderland has risen by 34%, with an average of 129 pets treated each day. The annual running costs this year (2011) are estimated to be £836,000.
With your help, £15,000 could pay for one of the following...
- 10 major operations for a dog hit by a car and the follow up treatment
- 35 operations to remove a foreign body from a cat’s intestines
- 230 pets having an x-ray
- 230 dental operations

Darcy
Patterdale terrier puppy, Darcy Dodds, from Washington, defied death after falling off Whitburn cliffs, leaving her with numerous life-threatening injuries.
Following a dramatic rescue operation, involving coast guards and the emergency services, Darcy was treated by the veterinary team at Sunderland PDSA PetAid hospital. Darcy had fractured the tibia (shin bone) in her left hind leg and broken all of the bones in her front paws. Her front legs were completely shattered.
Following surgery, Darcy visited PDSA every week so the veterinary team could assess her progress. Darcy made a full recovery and miraculously still has all four limbs intact.
Jake
Veterinary staff at Sunderland PDSA PetAid hospital saved the life of Labrador-cross, Jake, by removing a life-threatening tumour after his owner brought him in for a check-up, concerned that he was passing blood.
The vet team found that Jake was severely anaemic and required surgery immediately to remove a tumour in his intestine. One of the PDSA receptionists suggested her dog, Bella, could act as a blood donor, and 24 hours after his transfusion, Jake was operated on.
A few months later Jake was back to full health thanks to the vets and nurses at Sunderland PDSA, and, of course, Bella.

If you would prefer a quieter, but still challenging way of fundraising for the poorly pets of Sunderland, why not set up a new fundraising group in your area? PDSA has a number of volunteer fundraising groups across the UK helping to raise funds and awareness of our services for sick and injured pets. Volunteer fundraisers meet regularly and organise a wide variety of events, including sponsored walks, coffee mornings and dog shows. If you would like to form a group of your own please contact the fundraising department for more information.
