Fundraising can be daunting especially when you have a large target to raise. Here we have put together some tried and tested tips to give you a head start.
Essential Advice
Small Bites – Break your target in to easy to manage chunks. Plan several small fundraising events to make up your larger target.
Keep it simple – often the most successful events take little time and effort to organise. For example ask your colleagues to all bake a batch of cakes for a cake sale at work. In one morning you can make £100 towards your target.

PDSA Runners Tips
Here are some of the ways our 2009 PDSA runners raised their marathon sponsorship.
- Recruit your family as fundraisers. Get a sponsorship form to your parents, siblings, family, friends, and they can approach people that you don't know, such as a church or social groups, or their workplace. This is really good if they don't live near to you, as they will touch on a totally new group of people whom you won't have met. Try to encourage them to collect the donation up front, and also give them the responsibility for collecting in the money for you.
- See if your work has any type of matching deal. Turn £500 of sponsorship into £1,000 in an instant!
- Ask everyone you know, even if vaguely, and try to get a big mail shot or email out at the earliest opportunity.
- Be different - try and think of novel ways to raise funds.
- Put yourself out - a little bit of effort to organise and event or do something for people can reap charitable rewards.
- Try to do activities with different groups of friends so people don't get bored of dipping in their pocket.
- Ask businesses to donate good raffle prizes in exchange for publicity at your fundraising event and through a press release to a local paper.
