My male mouse occasionally seems to roll around on the floor very vigorously. He is shaky for a few moments afterwards, but soon gets back to normal. What could be causing this?
- There are some neurological diseases seen in mice, but these are comparatively rare. One type usually involves paralysis of the hindquarters and general signs of ill health. These diseases are important as they can sometimes spread to humans.
- Middle ear disease can cause a head tilt, circling and loss of balance. It is caused by a bacterial or fungal type infection.
- Diet associated dermatitis is seen in mice fed on a rodent or hamster mix that has a lot of nuts and sunflower seeds can trigger an intensely itchy skin that the mouse will try and alleviate through rubbing and scratching. The dyes in coloured biscuits can also start this off. Usually, however, the mouse will have the signs of dermatitis, such as a reddened skin.
It is a good idea to take your mouse along to the vet's for an examination, to find out what is causing your mouse's symptoms and to see if any treatment is necessary.
