Nursing Auxiliary

Nursing Auxiliaries undertake general cleaning duties within PDSA PetAid hospitals thereby maintaining general tidiness, hygiene and cleanliness. They also provide basic assistance to veterinary staff in the treatment of animals (e.g. holding animals).

Other duties include assisting veterinary nursing staff in the re-stocking of products and the general care of animal in-patients including feeding and cleaning kennels.

Nursing Auxiliaries are also expected to undertake reception duties as and when required and to communicate with owners, at the direction of veterinary staff, about the condition of patients.

Nursing Auxiliaries wear a uniform provided by PDSA at all times whilst on duty. They are expected to wear sensible shoes and to tie back hair of shoulder length or longer.

Although no formal qualifications are required as a PDSA Nursing Auxiliary, a genuine interest in and concern for the welfare of animals is essential, coupled with either previous practical experience, or a willingness to learn about general animal care. The ability to understand written instructions and to communicate verbally at all levels is also important, as is a good telephone manner.

Nursing Auxiliaries work normal hours in the main, however, in addition they are expected to be available to cover for the Animal Care Auxiliary during the night when required.
