My family is considering a ferret as a pet. I am concerned as I have heard they are aggressive animals and I am worried one of us will get bitten. Can you advise?

Actually although ferrets have a reputation for being unpredictable and aggressive I can truly say every ferret that has come to my surgery has been very tame and easy to handle. I think that is because responsible ferret owners begin to handle their ferrets when the animal is very young - from about four weeks of age is best. Ferrets like to be with other ferrets but remember two males may fight. Ferrets used for field sports are naturally aggressive and so would not make an ideal house pet.

Apart from that consideration if your family has given a lot of thought to the responsibilities of owning a pet there is no reason to rule out ferrets because they are supposedly aggressive.
