The principal function of Veterinary Surgeons within PDSA is to undertake clinical duties in accordance with the standards and ethics of the veterinary profession and with PDSA policies and practices.
Supported by a dedicated team of nursing staff, Veterinary Surgeons within PDSA are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of sick and injured animals belonging to owners eligible to receive free veterinary services from PDSA.
Veterinary Surgeons report to the Senior Veterinary Surgeon within their PetAid hospital and are expected to assist the Senior Veterinary Surgeon in implementing cost effective measures in the running of the PetAid Hospital. They are required to promote a good image of the work of PDSA by the maintenance of good clinical and personal standards and through clear communication with colleagues and the general public.
PDSA Veterinary Surgeons are expected to keep their professional knowledge updated by taking part in continuous professional development activities. They are required to assist in the training of nursing and other ancillary staff.
Conditions of employment
- Clear contract of employment.
- 38 hour working week standard 7.5 hour day finishing by 6.00pm.
- Minimum on call commitment of 1 in 4. With some sites now having up to 1 in 18 on call.
- 25 days annual holiday entitlement, increasing with length of service.
- Bank holidays covered on a rota basis with time off in lieu.
- Overtime is very rare and repaid as time off in lieu.
- Annual salary review for cost of living rises plus published incremental salary scales.
