Within PDSA Veterinary Nurses provide assistance to Veterinary Surgeons in the examination and treatment of sick and injured animals belonging to owners eligible to receive free veterinary services from PDSA.

Veterinary Nurses report to the Head Nurse of their PetAid hospital. Suitably trained Veterinary Nurses on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons list will be expected to undertake duties as outlined in Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act.

The duties of PDSA Veterinary Nurses include participating in the operation of nurses' clinics, undertaking diagnostic tests as directed by Veterinary Surgeons, dispensing prescribed medicaments and preparing surgical theatres for operations. In addition Veterinary Nurses assist Veterinary Surgeons in all aspects of surgery, care for animal in-patients, and are responsible for the cleaning of kennels and the preparation of food.

Conditions of employment

  • Clear contract of employment. 
  • 38 hour working week standard 7.5 hour day finishing by 6.00pm. 
  • Weekends minimum of 1:4 weekends (Saturday and Sunday) with extra duty payment given plus equivalent time off the following week. 
  • 25 days annual holiday entitlement, increasing with length of service. 
  • No night duties
  • Annual salary review for cost of living rises plus published incremental salary scales.
  • Access to stakeholder pension scheme from commencement of employment. Membership of occupational pension scheme after satisfying eligibility criteria.

The opportunity also exists to become involved with the training of student veterinary nurses by becoming an NVQ assessor.

Applicants for a post of Veterinary Nurse within PDSA must be qualified Veterinary Nurses, whose name currently appears on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' list.
