What are the advantages of having my cat neutered?
Advantages include:
- Neutered cats are less likely to wander and get into fights. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) are life-threatening diseases spread through saliva. Cats that are less likely to fight are therefore less likely to get bitten and be infected with FIV or FeLV.
- Female cats in season can be distressed and upset. They may also start spraying around the house or the garden to 'advertise' their availability.
- From the age of sexual maturity (about 4 to 5 months) a healthy female cat can produce up to 3 litters a year with a possible 5 or 6 per litter. Motherhood takes a lot out of a cat, and having repeated litters may shorten her life expectancy.
- It is often said that neutered cats get fat. This is not the case as only giving too much food causes a cat to get fat!
- A neutered cat is more likely to stay at home and be a good companion.
- As neutering female cats involves removing the ovaries and the uterus (womb), a cat cannot develop cancer of the ovaries or uterus in later life. They also will not develop infections of the uterus.
