F.A.Q Gerbils

How can I tell the sex of my gerbil?

  • Sexing should be possible from about 4 weeks, as at this age the male dark scrotal sacs may become visible. You can do this by placing your gerbil in a container with a clear base so you can inspect their underneath.
  • In adult male gerbils the distance between the anal and genital openings is twice that of the female. The distance in males is approximately 10mm, and in females 5mm
  • Males have a generally larger and more pronounced mid-line tan coloured sebaceous scent gland underneath their body
  • Males are more active in territorial marking, using this scent gland as well as urine and faeces
  • The male also may drum his feet more often than a female. Foot stamping is a territorial warning to other gerbils as well as a sign of displeasure. Male gerbils may also stamp their feet when they are near a female in season
