What substances cause allergies in hamsters?
If hamsters are allergic it is usually due to food or bedding. Skin lesions, sneezing and an eye discharge are the commonest signs, together with swollen feet. The skin is a bit scaly, like dandruff, and these white flakes are especially noticeable around the ears and eyes. There can also be some general hair loss.
The causes also include cigarette smoke, hair, furniture polish and perfume.
Bedding can also cause allergies. Therefore consider changing the bedding, replacing with shredded undyed white paper.
The other factor that should be considered is diet. Eliminate sunflower seeds, peanuts and any coloured biscuit pieces that contain dyes with E numbers. Change the diet gradually to include cooked rice, fruit and maize flakes.
