Pet E.R - Princess
Name: Princess
Age: 1 year
Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
Owner: Mary
What happened: A few days after a walk in the local park, playing with other dogs, Princess started to look unwell.
Owner's comment: She was vomiting, refusing food and became very withdrawn, hiding away, when normally she is a happy, sociable puppy. I knew I needed to get her some help so took her to PDSA.
Action taken: PDSA vets examined Princess and discovered she was suffering from parvovirus - a virus which is spread by contact with other infected dogs, which can be deadly. Princess was kept at PDSA for four days in isolation, before eventually being allowed home. She had daily medication to help her recover and was vaccinated to protect her against other diseases.
Vet's comment: Parvovirus is a very infectious disease that can be fatal. It can affect dogs of any age although puppies are especially vulnerable. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, (which may have blood in it) and feeling generally unwell and depressed. You can protect your pet from parvovirus and other diseases by making sure they are vaccinated.
