Pet E.R - Rooster
Name: Rooster
Age: 3 years
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Owner: Linda
What happened: Linda knew something was wrong when Rooster didn't come for his breakfast when she called him. When she went to investigate she was shocked to discover Rooster couldn't move.
Owner's comment: He was sat bolt upright at the top of the stairs like a statue. I tried talking to him and encouraging him, but he couldn't move. It was very distressing, so I called PDSA.
Action taken: The veterinary team examined Rooster and ran a series of tests. They weren't sure what was causing his paralysis, but he appeared to be suffering from a slipped disc in his spine. He was monitored in intensive care but there was no improvement over 48 hours. Linda was faced with a difficult decision: she could spend a lot of time caring for Rooster, with the possibility that he may never recover or have him put to sleep.
Vet's comment: The outlook for spinal injuries in dogs can be very poor and many dogs may never regain movement. If treatment is an option a lot of nursing care is required, including feeding, carrying, and emptying their bladder manually. It's a full-time job and takes real dedication.
Linda decided she couldn't give up on Rooster and provided 24-hour-a-day care. With the help of PDSA vets and nurses, she taught him to walk again and step by step the feeling slowly returned to his limbs. Four months later, Rooster is nearly back to his old self.
