Rabbits
Rabbits can suffer from many health problems from not being cared for properly. Do you know what their five welfare needs are?
PDSA pet care tips for rabbits
Here’s a quick check list of things I need:
- A warm, clean hutch large enough to do at least three hops in
- Lots of water from a clean bottle
- My own body size in hay to eat each day, washed greens and a few rabbit nuggets
- A spacious run to exercise in and lots of toys so I don’t get bored
- A gnawing block to wear my teeth down
- Company from another rabbit – I don’t like to be kept on my own. Remember not to keep me with guinea pigs as we can bully each other
- A vet to give me vaccinations and care if I am sick or injured
- Check the fur around my bottom every day in the summer - if it gets dirty, this can quickly attract flies and maggots
- Remember to have me neutered (an operation to stop me having babies), as it can be very difficult to find homes for baby rabbits. The operation also protects me from serious diseases
Watch a video of PDSA vets caring for a rabbit
PDSA vet, Alice, demonstrates how vets give rabbits a health-check. Examining a friendly white rabbit called Daisy, Alice checks that Daisy is bright and alert, and that her eyes, nose, teeth, ears, claws, skin, tummy, heart and lungs all look and sound healthy. Alice also tells owners how important it is to check that a rabbit’s back end is clean, to avoid the danger of flies laying their eggs on soiled skin.
