PDSA Pet Fit Club finalists are on track to be big losers!

PDSA’s annual slimming competition, Pet Fit Club, is designed to provide owners with the help and information they need to help their pets lose weight. This highly successful pet slimming initiative is now in its third year. The contestants have all worked very hard and the results of this years competition are below.

Over those three years PDSA vets have helped the finalists shed an incredible 120KG (approx 265 lbs or a staggering 19 stones) equivalent to: 

  • A one-year-old polar bear (weighs approx 120kg) 
  • Approximately two Newfoundland dogs (each weigh between 50kg to 69kg) 
  • Kevin McBride, the boxer who weighs 19 stone. 
  • A giant panda (Adults average 80kg - 125 kg) 
  • 30 adult cats (average cat weighs 8lbs to 10 lbs)

PDSA Senior veterinary Surgeon, Elaine Pendlebury, says: “Our pet obesity statistics are very worrying. PDSA has seen a steady rise in pet obesity and related health problems over the past five years. “

Oscar the dog

WINNER – PDSA Pet Fit Club Champ!
Ten-year-old Oscar, from Hamilton, Lanarkshire
Once a lardy Labrador, Oscar has shed a massive 10kg since he enrolled on PDSA Pet Fit Club.
His starting weight of 50kg made him 32% overweight! Oscar’s 10kg weight-loss means he has now shed 20% of his excess bodyweight and lost five inches from his waist.
Owner, Louise Critcher (53), says that her beloved hound starting gaining weight about a year ago. When she found out about PDSA Pet Fit Club, she knew it was just what Oscar needed.
Oscar has won for himself and his owner a pet friendly holiday courtesy of Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire.

Joint Second Place
In joint second place are thirteen-year-old Mongrel, Scooby, from Gillingham, who has lost 2.4 kg and ten-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Poppy, from Nottingham who has shed 5.8kg.

Scooby’s story
Owner, Jennifer Thompson (61), was the first to admit she used to spoil her pampered pooch. Scooby’s starting weight of 16.3kg made her 81% overweight!
Scooby’s favourite foods used to include: chicken curry, Thai food, fish and chips, pizza, Sunday lunch, ice cream, cake and sweets.
Today, Scooby is a quarter of the pet she used to be having shed 2.4kg and she has lost four inches from her waist, thanks to PDSA Pet Fit Club.

Poppy’s story
Poppy’s starting weight of 23kg made her around 64% overweight! Poppy’s favourite foods used to include scrambled egg, toast, liver and dog chews. Over the past five years, a few naughty treats combined with an under-active thyroid gland, led to a middle-age spread crisis for portly Poppy.
During PDSA Pet Fit Club, Poppy has shed 5.8kg, and over 5 inches from her waist!

Third place Ginger Tom cat, George from Liverpool
Overweight kitty George used to weigh in at 8.1kg which made him 69% overweight.
His luxurious lifestyle gradually caused him to pile on the pounds, but his unhealthy way of life is now a distant memory. Today, George has shed 1.3kg, and two inches from his waist.

Nikki the Chihuahua being held

Six-year-old Chihuahua, Nikki, from Middlesex:
Her starting weight of nearly 6kg made her 46% overweight. Owner, Sarah Dempsey, re-homed Nikki a year ago. She was already a big dog then, and despite every effort by Sarah, Nikki’s weight has remained a problem. After taking part in PDSA Pet Fit Club, Nikki has shed over half a kilogram and five inches from her waist!

Oscar the cat

Five-year-old cat, Oscar, from London: His starting weight of 10.75kg made him 79% overweight. His owner, Brenda Maughan, used to lock the fat feline in a separate room at meal times to stop him stealing her other cat’s dinner! Oscar has lost an impressive 1.45kg on PDSA Pet Fit Club.

Storm the Labrador

Four-year-old Labrador, Storm, from Brighton: His starting weight of 48kg made him 37% overweight. Storm used to scavenge food at every opportunity and has even stolen a Sunday roast in the past! Today, he’s a changed dog and thanks to PDSA Pet Fit Club, Storm has lost 4.2kg.
