Our Sweet Little Snug Bug

How can someone so little make such a massive impact?! The only thing small about Rodney was his size; everything else was big! His appetite, his zest, his love of life, his binkies, his cheekiness, his personality.

Born around March 2010, Rodney had a bad start in life as he was housed in a small hutch with another rabbit that bullied him, as well as a Guinea pig. He didn't have access to hay so he had dental problems, as well as bite wounds from being bullied. He was rescued around the age of 2 and bonded with Millie, whom he lived with until he died. Aged 4, we found him and Millie and adopted them. They came to their forever home with us on 2nd August 2014 and it was a joyous day!

Throughout his life, Rodney has had his share of health problems, including a scary episode of suspected E.C, but he has always been such a fighter that he bounced back stronger than ever. If he refused kale - his absolute favourite food - we knew he wasn't feeling well. As soon as he started muching it again our panicked hearts drew a little relief!

Rodney's favourite things were chewing cardboard and shoe laces - the first wasn't a problem whereas the latter was! We learnt fairly quickly not to leave anything resembling shoe laces lying around! He loved to come into the living room in the evenings and perform zoomies around the coffee table. His preferred spot to rest was under our coffee table on a shaggy rug (he'd kindly leave a little collection of poos as a calling card) or his soft bed in the kitchen, from which he had a good view of the fridge in case we were to open the door! Another of his favourite pastimes was to sunbathe; he was housed in a spacious enclosure in the rescue but it was in a barn so he didn't have direct sunlight there. When he first arrived he looked so contented to stretch out and rest his head on the ground, as if to say 'this is the life'.

He wasn't always the most tuned in to Millie's needs - she'd shove her head under his chin to be groomed but he wouldn't always get the hint. When he did though, he gave it his all. She's part Lionhead so he would go into what I called 'hairdresser mode' and spend hours going through each strand. His confidence gave her more confidence but, likewise, he depended on her for some mothering and comfort. Such a sweet partnership to have witnessed.

Rodney passed away on Saturday 22nd February, just days away from his 10th birthday. He passed peacefully at the vets after a short but aggressive neurological disease. He is very, very much missed and is completely irreplaceable. Millie is almost 9 and she will be with us until her time also comes.

What a joy our pets are! They are worth all the time, energy, heartache and expense, no question. They give so much to us and deserve our love and commitment.

Rodney is still missed so very much. His sister, Millie, passed away shortly after her 10th birthday, and just over a year since Rodney passed. They would have loved the garden at our new house, especially all the dandelions in the lawn! There will never be another Roddy Roo Roo. X
