Lola

Lola, from Alfreton, was a giant rabbit with a monstrous appetite who weighed in at over a stone (7.4kg) at the start of Pet Fit Club, but has changed beyond all recognition.

In six months she lost 4lb (1.8kg) – the largest amount ever lost by a rabbit in the 12 year history of the competition. She has been Highly Commended by PDSA judges.

The three-year-old rabbit initially piled on the pounds due to owner Karen Birks’s husband Gary feeding her too many carrot treats, which are high in sugar. Lola’s dislike of cold weather also meant she preferred to stay inside her hutch during the winter months rather than venture outside to exercise.

Prior to Pet Fit Club, Lola’s huge size was also causing serious health implications as she was unable to groom herself properly, and Karen was forced to bathe her regularly to ensure her bottom was kept clean.

Karen (48) said: “I’m delighted with how well she’s done, it’s amazing. When they told me she was the top rabbit slimmer ever in the history of PDSA Pet Fit Club I couldn’t believe it!

“She’s got so much more energy than before and she seems a lot happier, she’s certainly a lot cheekier. When I see her hopping around the garden it makes me so happy because this has changed her life.”

Karen described the competition as an “eye opener” and said she was hugely grateful to the staff at PDSA Derby Pet Hospital for the support they had received.

She added: “I can’t thank them enough, they’ve been fantastic. We didn’t realise we were doing everything wrong, in terms of what we were feeding her and how much, but the vets and nurses have put us on the right path and now we want to keep it up."
