Leicester vet takes on his EIGHTEENTH marathon for PDSA

19 April 2017

A PDSA vet from Leicester is gearing up for the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 23 April, marking his ninth Virgin Money London Marathon and his eighteenth marathon challenge.

Chris Sherwood (51) will be taking on the 26.2-mile challenge in aid of PDSA, which treats 470,000 pets every year. Chris has been working for the charity, saving the lives of sick and injured pets in need, for the last 19 years.

With a gruelling training programme in place to help ensure he crosses the finish line in his target time of 3 hours and 20 minutes, Chris is hoping that fellow animal lovers will support his marathon challenge.

Chris said: “Every day I see the impact PDSA has on the lives of some of the UK’s most vulnerable pets. Our work at Leicester PDSA Pet Hospital is a lifeline to thousands of pets in the city that might otherwise go without veterinary treatment. With my passion for animal welfare and love of running, I’m hoping to raise hundreds of pounds towards the treatment and care of pets in need.”

“This year will be my ninth London marathon but it will probably be my most painful, and my slowest. I have Plantar Fasciitis which causes pain in my heel. I’m training six days a week but trying to stick with cross-training and strength work to protect my foot as much as I can. Maybe appropriately, the ‘downward dog’ yoga position is my new best friend, as it helps loosen my calves and hamstrings which are triggers for the foot pain.”

Alongside his eighteen marathons Chris has also completed five ultramarathons, including a tough 104mile North Downs trail run in August 2016, and Challenge Roth, a triathlon challenge in Germany.

Chris added: “It has also been my privilege to train and compete alongside my blind friend Haseeb Ahmad, who ran last year’s London Marathon for PDSA, guided by Tim Henning.

“Everything I have achieved has been possible because I have loving and supportive wife (Jane) who does these crazy things with me. She is the one who does most of the planning for our amazing adventures together such as walking the Tour de Mont Blanc last summer.

Rosie Gibbons, PDSA Community Events Fundraiser, said: “Chris’s inspiring marathon effort means many pets will receive the vital veterinary treatment they need and we’re enormously grateful to have his support. We’ll be cheering Chris and the rest of Team PDSA’s runners along the course and I hope local animal lovers will support him too.”
