Meet Nelly

cute puppy

Eight-year-old PDSA pet patient, Nelly, needed emergency treatment at Wolverhampton PDSA after a freak accident left her caught under the wheels of a van. The impact of the accident caused a severe injury to Nelly’s back, and without PDSA her owner, Debby, wouldn’t have anyone else to turn to.

Dog insurance can provide reassurance for those unexpected trips to the vet, but there are a few routine treatments that insurance doesn't cover. This includes:

Pet insurance also does not cover pre-exiting conditions. A pre-existing condition would be a condition, symptom, illness or injury your pet is suffering or has suffered from before you take out a policy. Any conversations that you’ve had about your pet’s health or behaviour with a vet or other professionals would also be taken into consideration and would be considered as a pre-existing condition, even if your pet did not receive treatment at the time.

For accidental injury or poisoning, you will not be covered for the first 3 days of your policy. For illnesses, you will not be covered for the first 14 days of your policy. Switching to PDSA Pet Insurance? If you can prove your previous cover runs up to the policy start date, we can waive this for you.

Lifetime Dog Insurance is the most comprehensive type of policy you can get for your dog. It covers a range of illnesses and injuries that can occur at any time throughout their life, including both one-off and long-term conditions. This means that if your dog develops an illness after you take out your insurance, they’ll be covered for that condition for as long as your policy remains active. This differs from Time-Limited policies, which only cover treatment for illnesses and injuries for up to 12 months.

Lifetime Insurance covers your dog up to the amount you select each year for illnesses and accidents combined, and renews annually. Lifetime policies tend to cost more than other policies, as they cover conditions for your dog’s life. If you’re looking for pet insurance for dogs that covers ongoing conditions, Lifetime Dog Insurance is a good option.

For more information about the dog insurance policies and levels of cover available, take a look at our policy page.

It’s difficult to say exactly how much your dog’s insurance will cost, as there are lots of different factors including your dog’s breed and age, and the type and level of policy that you choose.

You can take a look at our policy page to find a cover level that works for your needs and budget or, to get an accurate cost for your dog’s cover, you may find it helpful to get a dog insurance quote.

Yes, if your dog’s dental work is due to illness or injury, then it will be covered. This now includes the cost of dental crowns, roots canals and fillings. Remember, in order to be covered for dental work, you will need to keep up with your dog’s annual dental check-up with your vet, and follow any advice they provide.

No, it isn’t a legal requirement to insure your dog, but as an owner, it is your responsibility to cover the cost of your dog’s healthcare. Insurance for dogs provides peace of mind for those unexpected visits to the vet by supporting you with the cost of medical expenses. PDSA Dog Insurance also includes third-party liability** providing cover in case your dog causes accidental injury or damage to another person or their property.

Yes, you can insure your dog from 8 weeks of age with PDSA Puppy Insurance – the sooner you get your puppy covered, the better!

With PDSA Dog Insurance you’ll need to continue to use your own registered vet as usual. Every PDSA Dog Insurance policy sold does however contribute to our life-saving charity work and helps us to treat poorly pets in need.
