What to do if your cat can't pee

Overview

• If your cat is unable to pee, they could be suffering with a blocked bladder, which is a life-threatening condition
• Contact your vet ASAP if your cat is having trouble peeing.

What to do if your cat can’t pee

1. Check your cat’s litter tray to see if they have passed anything at all.
2. Check around your home, especially cold/hard floors, the bath, sink behind furniture and on beds (many cats change where they pee if they are in pain).
   • If your cat is unable to pass urine, they may be suffering from a blocked bladder, which is a life-threatening emergency.
   • If your cat is passing small amounts of urine, they may be suffering from a urine infection or a condition called Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (both can lead to a blocked bladder).
3. Call your vet ASAP if your cat is struggling to pee, never attempt to treat him/her at home.
