Do gerbils need company?

Gerbils need the company of other gerbils. It’s best to keep two or three together that have grown up together as littermates. This minimises the likelihood of their fighting. If gerbils older than 10 weeks of age are introduced to each other they are likely to fight.

Males and females shouldn’t be kept together as they can breed and it can be difficult to find homes for the young. They can produce offspring from about 10 weeks of age, producing between three and six babies each time they have a litter.

Who should care for my gerbils if I go on holiday?

If you go away, you should leave your gerbils in the care of a trusted friend or neighbour. A small transport cage will allow you to transfer your gerbils safely.
