Doky - PDSA Order of Merit

Police DOG (PD) Doky posthumously received the PDSA Order of Merit for a distinguished career and outstanding devotion to duty with the National Police Department of the Balearic Islands between 2009 – 2019.

The PDSA Order of Merit celebrates extraordinary animals who demonstrate the unique bond between animals and humans – a bond that is PDSA’s mission to protect.

PD Doky, a black Labrador retriever, was a full-time Explosive Detection Police Dog who supported Police Officers during explosive searches, helping to protect and keep the public safe.

Doky was formally awarded the PDSA Order of Merit in 2023 for his service.

Doky's story

Doky joined the Mallorca Police at just four-months-old. He quickly displayed the skills and aptitude required for an Explosive Detector Police Dog.

During his ten-year career, using his characteristic intensity, energy, and determination, Doky completed 8,100 preventive explosive searches. These searches took place in a wide variety of environments, often in response to suspected threats or suspected packages being located.

In July and August 2009, Doky played a key role in the aftermath of two terrorist attacks. Explosives devices were hidden across Palma Nova city, which resulted in the deaths of two Civil Guard Officers. Doky was involved in searches to ensure the city was clear of any further devices after the initial explosions.

Doky also played a pivotal role in the security procedures for hundreds of high-profile visits to the island. These included assisting the security team to sweep venues being visited by the Prime Minister of China as well as canine searches ahead of the King of Spain’s and Royal Family’s annual summer visits.

During his retirement, Doky continued to provide invaluable services to the Force with their community work.

With his cheerful, playful nature and excellent obedience, Doky met thousands of schoolchildren and hundreds of elderly people at community talks and demonstrations.

He was a regular visitor at exhibitions and children’s hospitals, representing the Force and highlighting the role of service dogs in society.

In 2018, the Chief of Police also awarded him the Medal of Honour for Best K9 Explosives Detection Dog.

PD Doky’s unique and pioneering service and contribution to society were of huge value, making him a deserving recipient of the PDSA Order of Merit.
