Bailey's Story

Poor Bailey was looking for a snack and managed to get into the chocolate her owner thought was well out of paws' reach. Her owner knew the dangers of chocolate poisoning and was terrified of losing her beloved dog.

Thankfully, PDSA were there for them both.

Active and cheeky Staffie Bailey was a mischievous dog. She certainly always kept owner Angela on her toes!

With her big Staffie smile, it was hard for Angela to ever say no to Bailey, but there were certain things she knew were an absolute no-no – chocolate being one of them. So when Angela bought two large bars as Christmas presents, she made sure to tie them safely in a bag and keep them far away from Bailey. Or so she thought.

While Angela nipped out to the shop, Bailey saw her chance and went straight for the sweet treat. She managed to get hold of the bag and ripped it open, then ate all she could before Angela got home.

Angela was devastated. She knew chocolate was deadly for dogs and was terrified of losing her best friend. She called their local PDSA, preparing herself for the worst.

“I was terrified she wasn’t going to make it. She’s my world and I would be distraught if anything happened to her.”

Vets advised Angela to bring Bailey straight in. It was a race against time to try and get the toxins out before they did too much damage or even killed poor Bailey.

Bailey was given special medicine to make her sick to get the deadly chocolate out of her system, along with treatment to help reduce the absorption of the harmful chemicals found in chocolate.

Thanks to the fast response of the PDSA veterinary team, Bailey pulled through and was sent home to recover, much to Angela’s relief.

Bailey was lucky but there are still so many poorly pets who need PDSA’s help every single day. Our teams continue to work round-the-clock to make sure as many poorly pets get help as they can.
