Marley's story

Mischievous Marley needed emergency treatment after scoffing some poisonous snacks while his owner, Charlotte, was out. Terrified of losing her beloved pet, Charlotte didn’t know where to turn when she found Marley poorly.

PDSA were there for them both.

Five-year-old rescue Staffie, Marley, was living the good life with his owner, Charlotte. They spent lots of time together and always got to see Charlotte’s daughter and granddaughter (who were great fun to play with).

Like any dog, Marley was curious about anything and everything in the home. Charlotte did her best to keep him out of trouble and as they approached their first Christmas together, Charlotte knew there were lots of things that could be harmful to Marley so she took extra care.

When Charlotte popped out with her daughter one day, Marley got into trouble. Despite Charlotte’s attempts to put things out of Marley’s reach, he managed to get his paws on a Christmas pudding and a box of chocolates.

Charlotte knew both Christmas pudding and chocolate were extremely dangerous to dogs, so when she came home to find empty wrappers and a half eaten pudding she knew she had to act quickly to save her friend.

Charlotte called PDSA, who advised her to bring poor Marley straight in. It was a race against time to get the toxins out of his system – the ingredients in Christmas puddings can cause kidney failure and even death in dogs if left too long.

All Charlotte could do was anxiously wait for news while the PDSA team got to work. Marley needed a fluid drip to dilute the toxins and special medication to stop his body absorbing anymore.

It was touch and go, with nurses closely monitoring the rescue pooch. Thankfully, Marley pulled through and was able to go home with Charlotte for lots of TLC and dog-safe treats from then on!

Marley was back to his bouncy self in time for a relaxing Christmas at home, but our teams are still working hard every day to get tails wagging over the holiday season.
