Derby Pet Hospital receives funding boost

03 October 2017

Poorly pets at our Derby Pet Hospital can benefit from a new high-tech piece of equipment after receiving a funding boost.

The new £800 ultrasonic cleaner is now in use at the hospital at City Gate, London Road, thanks to funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Sophie Lunn, Client Services Manager at PDSA Derby Pet Hospital, said their old cleaner, used to sterilise medical instruments, was ageing and in desperate need of replacement.

She said: “The previous steriliser was around 20 years old and eventually stopped working. We were in urgent need of a new one and it’s already made a huge difference.

“The new cleaner is much quicker which means we can do more cleaning over a shorter period and perform more operations if necessary.”

Ultrasonic cleaning is a process that uses ultrasound to clean items. The machine uses water and a sterilising agent to kill germs and medical equipment can be ready to use within a matter of minutes in some cases.

Sterilisation of equipment is vital to prevent infection and contamination of veterinary instruments and other equipment.

The new ultrasonic cleaner has been allocated to the hospital as part of a National Emergency Equipment Fund run by PDSA thanks to support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Earlier this year the hospital also received a £700 blood pressure monitor.
