Local animal-lovers take on Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge for poorly pets

21 June 2018

Staff from our Middlesbrough Pet Hospital veterinary team, plus friends, family and supporters from the Teesside community, are preparing to tackle the heady heights of the Tees Transporter Bridge on Sunday (24 June) to raise funds for sick and injured pets in the local area.

The fundraisers will climb the stomach-churning 164ft structure before completing their challenge, with some taking on the free-fall abseil from the colossal bridge and others, a hair-raising 600ft ‘Bridge Walk’.

Daredevils in the group are also braving the ‘Xtreme Abseil’, a 50m horizontal free-fall in the shape of a star.

The group are hoping local animal-lovers will support their sky-high challenge to raise funds for poorly pets.

Steph Williams, Head Veterinary Nurse at Middlesbrough PDSA Pet Hospital, said: “Our hospital provides care to thousands of pets in the local community, helping owners who would otherwise struggle to pay for treatment for their beloved pet. It is vital that we continue to provide a service, and with no Government funding we rely solely on generous public support. That is why fundraising events like this are so important.”

The team are taking on the challenge to mark PDSA’s 100th birthday, and they are hoping to raise £50 each for every year that the charity has been saving pets’ lives, making their fundraising target £5,000.

Steph added: “I have abseiled once for PDSA and I’m prepared to dangle again for our fabulous cause. Having everyone else alongside me, many of whom are facing severe fears and phobias to do the same thing only strengthens my belief in their dedication to our fantastic, life-saving cause.”

Rosie Gibbons, who looks after fundraising at PDSA, said: “We’re so grateful that our brilliant Middlesbrough veterinary team, as well as local supporters, are taking on this challenge for poorly pets. Their support will mean vulnerable pets have the vital treatment they need. We would love to see the local community show their support, I’m sure they’ll have a brilliant day and enjoy the views when they reach the top of the iconic Transporter bridge!”
