Norwegian Forest Breed Information
Norwegian Forests are a playful breed that don’t require constant attention. You won’t hear much from a Norwegian Forest cat unless they want your attention. They’re not known to be real lap cats, and are more likely to be found at a high point in the room.
Breed-related health problems:
Owners are, understandably, upset when their cat develops a health problem linked to its breed. Often they wish they’d known what problems the breed was prone to have. The potential health problems that Norwegian Forests are prone to include:
- Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) – a condition where cysts, present in the kidneys from birth, gradually increase in size until the kidney cannot function normally, resulting in kidney failure. A genetic test is available for this disease.
We’d recommend discussing the medical history of your potential kitten’s parents and grandparents, and think very carefully before taking on a cat with any of the health conditions listed above evident in the family line.
Although they are a long haired breed, Norwegian Forests shouldn’t need the daily care of some other long haired breeds. However, it is a good idea to give a little extra grooming in the spring when the coat is changing from a heavy winter to a summer coat.
