New Manchester Pet Wellbeing Centre underway

Animal lovers urged to dig deep for charity appeal

Thousands of Manchester’s pets will soon feel the benefit from a pioneering Pet Wellbeing Centre, as building work starts on our new state-of-the-art hospital.

The PDSA Manchester Pet Wellbeing Centre, The Montague-Panton Animal Hospital, at the junction of Pottery Lane and Redgate Lane, Gorton, will support pet owners across Manchester, replacing our current PDSA facility in Old Trafford.

Our vet staff, David Brookfield and Zoe Walton made the first dig to help kick-start the building work.

Commenting on the new Centre, PDSA Vet Nurse Zoe, said: "We are all excited to see work start on our new Wellbeing Centre. PDSA provides a vital service for Manchester pet owners struggling to provide vet care for their pets. I’m delighted that work has started at the new site and I’m hoping this will inspire local animal lovers to help us raise the remaining funds we need. I can’t wait to see the doors open to the new hospital next year.”

We first unveiled plans for the new facility in March 2018 with the launch of a public appeal to raise £2.4 million to build and equip the facility.

With the support of local animal lovers, charity supporters, businesses and a significant donation from the Montague-Panton Animal Welfare Trust, whose name the hospital will carry, building work has now begun. However we still needs to raise the remaining funds and we are urging local people to support the appeal.

The new hospital will replace our current premises which has now reached breaking point. The Centre will feature a bigger, brighter waiting area, with separate areas for cats and dogs, reducing the stress a visit to the vet can cause. It will also house improved kennel facilities to allow pets to recover quicker from surgery and treatment in a better environment, a diagnostic room, digital x-ray facilities, and more car parking.

David Lowe, Managing Director at MC Construction, who are undertaking the build, said: “We are excited to begin work on this development and are delighted to be partnering with the PDSA team to deliver a high-quality facility for the Manchester pet community.

“Having two office dogs at MC Construction, we have a special place in our hearts for this project.”

Thanks to the generous support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery, our Wellbeing facilities in Manchester will enable greater engagement with schoolchildren and the local community and help educate the next generation on how to become responsible pet owners.

Today, our service in Manchester costs over £1.3 million to deliver annually and they rely entirely on generous public support for funding.
