Pet insurance for multiple pets

What is multi-pet insurance?

Multi-pet insurance is an excellent choice for those looking to cover more than one pet and have the convenience of managing all their policies in one place. Whether you're looking for multi-cat insurance or multi-dog insurance, our policies offer flexibility and simplicity for households with multiple pets.

How does multi-pet insurance work?

Multi-pet insurance allows you to manage all your pet insurance policies in one place. So, if you welcome a new cat or dog into your family, then you can add them to your PDSA Pet Insurance without any complication.

Like any single policy, you will need to renew each new policy every year for your cover to continue. You can either pay for a year’s premium upfront or pay monthly by direct debit to spread the cost.

What are the benefits of multi-pet insurance?

There are many benefits to cover your pets with PDSA Multi-pet Insurance, which include:

  • Having all your pet insurance policies in one place so you can easily manage all your policies. With PDSA Pet Insurance, you’ll be able to manage your policies through the PDSA Insure Hub. You’ll be able to check the status of all your policies from claims to the remaining cover amounts in one place.
  • Choosing different levels of cover for your pets. That means you won’t have to stick to the same cover and can customise it specifically for your pet’s needs.
  • Claiming for vet fees directly through the PDSA Insure Hub, making it easier for you to claim. Plus, 97% of claims will be paid in 5 working days*.
  • Using your multi-pet insurance policy at any vet practice. This means that you can continue to use your usual vet and don’t have to worry about changing your pet’s vet practice.

What to consider when buying multi-pet insurance

Before taking out multi-pet insurance, there are few things you need to consider, such as:

  • Pre-existing illnesses or injuries may not be covered: Most multi-pet insurance policies don’t cover pre-existing conditions. To make sure that your pets are covered, take out pet insurance as soon as possible to ensure you're protected should they become unwell.
  • There may be a waiting period: For accidental injury or poisoning, you will not be covered for the first three days of your policy. For illnesses, you will not be covered for the first 14 days of your policy. Switching to PDSA Pet Insurance? If you can prove your previous cover runs up to the policy start date, we can waive this for you.
  • Vaccinating your pets: If you pet falls ill with an illness that could have been prevented through a vaccine, your pet’s treatment may not be covered. Make sure they’re up to date with their vaccines.
  • Routine and preventive treatment are often not covered: Treatments such as vaccinations, spaying, castration, flea, worm and tick treatments, grooming and teeth maintenance may not be covered in your multi-pet insurance.
  • Be mindful of your excess: If you make a claim, you will have to pay an excess, usually for every claim you make.
  • There are age limits to policies: New multi-pet insurance policies have age limits. For most new policies, cats can be insured up to their tenth birthday, while dogs can be insured up to their eighth birthday. If you’re insured before your pets reach these ages, then your multi-pet insurance will continue to cover your pets as they get older.
  • Excluded breeds: Certain breeds of dogs and cats will not be eligible for most standard pet insurance policies. For example, breeds listed under the Dangerous Dog act 1991 will require a special kind of pet insurance policy.

Be upfront and honest about your situation before taking out multi-pet insurance to ensure you’re covered.

Multi-pet insurance can provide reassurance for those unexpected trips to the vet, but there are a few routine treatments that insurance doesn't cover. This includes:

Pet insurance also does not cover pre-exiting conditions. A pre-existing condition would be a condition, symptom, illness or injury your pet is suffering or has suffered from before you take out a policy. Any conversations that you’ve had about your pet’s health or behaviour with a vet or other professionals would also be taken into consideration and would be considered as a pre-existing condition, even if your pet did not receive treatment at the time.

Remember to keep preventative treatments (like vaccinating and de-worming dogs) up-to-date as this will help protect your furry friends against lots of nasties. If you're worried about cost, speak to your vet – they may offer a monthly plan to cover these treatments and your pets’ annual health checks.
