Climbing Ben Nevis in memory of Jake
02 September 2025
In July 2025, Daniel and Rebecca took on the challenge to climb Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, in memory of their beloved dog, Jake.
After PDSA stepped in to help them during a difficult time, Daniel and Rebecca decided to give back by raising funds for the UK’s largest vet charity.
Losing a pet is never easy, but for Daniel and Rebecca, Jake’s memory inspired them to take on a challenge that would make a real difference. In total, their hike raised £755 for PDSA to support people and their poorly pets.
This is their touching tribute to their dog, who meant the world to them.
More than just a pet
“Jake wasn’t just a pet; he was family. We adopted him in 2015 after he’d been passed from home to home, and he quickly became a constant source of joy and comfort. He meant the world to us, and he’ll always hold a special place in our hearts.”
A sudden goodbye
“In February 2023, everything changed. Out of nowhere, Jake stopped moving. We rushed him to an emergency vet in Glasgow and were given devastating news: Jake had a tumour that had burst, and there was nothing the vet team could do. The kindest option was to put him to sleep. It was a huge shock – just the night before, he was running around like his usual self, yet we suddenly found ourselves saying goodbye.
“When we couldn’t afford Jake’s vet bills, PDSA stepped in and gave us the support we desperately needed. Their compassion during such a difficult time made a lasting impact. After losing Jake, we knew we wanted to give something back. That’s why we chose to climb Ben Nevis as a fundraising challenge in his memory.”
A climb full of emotion
“Leading up to the climb, we felt a mix of excitement and nerves. We were ready for the challenge, but also deeply aware of the emotional weight it carried. Reaching the summit was overwhelming. We felt a sense of achievement knowing we’d done something meaningful for Jake and PDSA. There were tears, especially as we scattered some of Jake’s ashes at the top. It was heartbreaking and healing at the same time.”
Jake’s legacy
“Jake’s story is about resilience, love, and the special bond that forms when a pet finds their forever home. We’re so glad to have been part of his journey, and even more proud to have done something in his name that’ll help other pet owners when they need it most – just like we did.
“To anyone thinking about fundraising for PDSA or taking on a challenge in memory of a beloved pet, we’d say do it. It’s a beautiful way to honour your pet’s memory and support a charity that truly makes a difference.”
