Treat your feline friend with our vet-approved pancake recipe for cats.

Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is just around the corner. And you might be wondering if you can give your precious pet a purr-fect pancake treat to celebrate the day.

With our vet-approved recipe, you can! Treat your furry companion to tasty cat-friendly pancakes with our whisker-licking homemade recipe.

Can cats eat pancakes?

Feeding cats, or any pet, human food scraps is not recommended. Especially as most human foods contain ingredients that can be toxic or harmful to pets. Pancakes for humans can contain flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, milk, eggs and butter – with eggs being the most suitable for pets, but only when fed in moderation. The others may cause upset tummies.

It’s important to take care when introducing any new food to your cat especially if your cat has a sensitive tummy or any special dietary needs as a result of a medical condition. When giving your cat a new food, introduce it slowly and in small amounts. If you are unsure whether an ingredient is suitable for your cat, it is always best to check with your vet.

Our easy cat pancake recipe doesn’t require any baking and can be done in three easy steps.

Ingredients

  • 30g of tinned tuna in water with no added salt
  • 30g cooked turkey breast or steamed broccoli
  • 50g sweet potato – pureed/mashed (see below)
  • 1 banana (to garnish)

Step one: Prepare the tuna

Open the tin of tuna and weigh 30g. Then, drain the water from the tuna and pop the tuna in the mixing bowl. Break the tuna chunks down into smaller bits with a fork.

Step two: Add the rest of the ingredients

Add the cooked turkey or steamed broccoli to the mixing bowl with the tuna. Following this, slowly stir in the sweet potato puree.

Mix it together until it binds, making sure it’s not too watery. If the turkey or broccoli looks too big for your cat, break it into smaller pieces with a fork.

Extra Step: How to make sweet potato puree

If you’ve not been able to find sweet potato puree in the supermarket, then you can easily make your own. All you’ll need are sweet potatoes!

  • First, you’ll need to wash and dry the potatoes.
  • Then, make sure that you pierce the potatoes with a fork several times and place them in the oven at 180°C.
  • Roast them for around 50 minutes or until the potatoes are wrinkled.
  • Allow the potatoes to cool before peeling them.
  • Place the peeled potatoes into a food blender. Make sure that you blend until the texture is smooth. And now you have sweet potato puree!

Step 3: Make the pancakes

Take the mixture and shape it into mini pancakes. You can even chop up a banana and add a slice as a garnish. Now, you can serve your cat the delicious pancakes.

This recipe makes three small pancakes - so make sure that you give your feline friend the right portion of food. Treats for your cat should make up no more than 10% of their daily food intake – so make sure that you reduce your cats’ food to account for the treats you feed them.

We recommend cutting up the pancakes into smaller pieces to ensure that they aren’t being overfed. Thankfully, you can store the pancakes in the fridge for two days and up to three months in the freezer.
