Volunteering at PDSA: Sophia’s story so far

by PDSA | 11 September

Sophia has volunteered at our Neath PDSA charity shop in Wales since December 2023 after hearing about it through a friend.

Speaking about her experience, Sophia said: “A friend told me about volunteering at PDSA. I love animals, so I thought volunteering there would be a great way to show my support and do something important. I’ve volunteered before, so I did have some experience, but it’s not needed at PDSA. They provided me with plenty of training and support to get me started, such as using the till and organising stock.

Sophia spends most days volunteering at our Neath shop every week, where she helps serve customers. She also sorts through the much-needed donations from the general public by pricing items in the backroom before they’re moved onto the shop floor.

In the little over six months she’s been a PDSA volunteer, Sophia says meeting customers and getting to know a great team of people who also volunteer their time are her favourite parts about the role.

“Spending time with the lovely team at the shop and putting a smile on the customer’s faces are what I love most about volunteering at PDSA. I get to meet lots of people of all different ages from all different backgrounds. It’s really sociable and a great way to make new friends.”

Recently, Sophia received our Pawsome Award, which recognises the commitment, passion, and positivity our amazing PDSA volunteers show in their roles.

Neath Shop Manager Sarah Inverarity, who nominated Sophia for the award, said: “Sophia has shown great passion in her volunteering role since starting last year, and her confidence has grown so much. From customer service on the shop floor to sorting and pricing in the back, Sophia has shown excellent teamwork within all aspects of her role.

“She’s a wonderful team member, a pleasure to work with, and a very worthy Pawsome Award recipient.”

Sophia knows how important volunteering at PDSA is for her. Because of this, she encourages anyone with some free time to consider volunteering too.

“If you can, I’d definitely recommend gifting your time to PDSA. Volunteering here helps lots of sick and injured animals. It’s an amazing cause and a great place for people who are passionate about pets. The staff and team of volunteers are so welcoming and friendly too.

“If you’re 18 or over and a young adult, like me, volunteering also helps you build your CV by learning lots of new skills.”
