Volunteer with PDSA

Why volunteer?

Help animals

Everything our volunteers do helps a vet help a pet, from raising funds at shops and events to helping out in our offices or hospitals.

Great for your CV

Our volunteering programme has won awards and whether you’re just starting out or changing your career, you’ll gain practical skills, work experience and a reference from us.

Make new friends

PDSA is a friendly place and with nearly 10,000 volunteers every year, it’s a great chance to keep busy and meet lots of different people who care about animals.

It's fun!

Lots of our volunteers comment about how uplifting it is to be part of our team. But don’t take our word for it – come and see for yourself!

Where you can help

In our shops

Help our High Street shops help pets

If you like meeting people, volunteer at a PDSA shop. You’ll be joining a friendly team and there are lots of different things you could do.

You may be welcoming and helping customers. You might fancy helping in the stock room, getting goods ready for sale and spotting an antique or designer label or two, or helping to collect donated stock by being one of our Volunteer Drivers. Whatever you’re doing, it’s a great chance to help generate funds and raise awareness of PDSA’s work.

  • Gain experience with a professional retailer
  • Learn customer service skills
  • Prepare goods ready for sale
  • Create stylish windows and displays

Help keep our offices running

Are you a wonder with Word or excel with Excel? Are you helpful, adaptable and great at admin? Maybe you’re a whiz at filing or have the perfect telephone manner. Then come and help out in our offices.

Most (but not all) of our office roles are based at our Head Office in Telford, Shropshire. We have lots of different departments covering things like finance, marketing, education and fundraising. Come and play a vital part in the work we do at PDSA.

Be a calm and caring presence

Are you a caring person who can comfort worried clients or coax a poorly puss to eat? Are you unflappable in a crisis and un-phased by the everyday side of pet care? Though we don’t have as many opportunities as in our shops, there may be a place for you in one of our PDSA Pet Hospitals.

They are amazing places but remember hospitals aren’t for the faint hearted. We have different roles from general assistants, who assist vets in caring for poorly pets, to volunteer positions for fully qualified nurses and vets who want to use their skills to give something back to the community.

Put the fun into fundraising

Our dedicated fundraisers are real sweet talkers. These weatherproof wonders are regularly found representing PDSA at community events, making us money whilst having a great time. Our volunteers put the fun into fundraising, encouraging people to part with their cash at everything from sponsored events to collections.

Why not gather some animal loving friends and start your own?

We’re award winners

We pride ourselves on our award-winning volunteer programme. We are the 1st national charity to gain the prestigious Investing in Volunteers quality standard accreditation. And in 2012 PDSA was one of only 60 charities to be awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award for Volunteering because of our commitment to volunteers and their extraordinary contribution.

The Volunteer Awards

Every year we celebrate volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to PDSA. Meet some of them here and find out how they’ve made a difference to customers, other volunteers and pet patients.
